Woman admits grocery store theft

A 26-year-old Pembroke woman has admitted stealing more than $200 worth of groceries.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Shaniqwa O’Brien admitted the offence that happened at Lindo’s Market in Devonshire on January 5.

According to prosecutor Victoria Greening, O’Brien was seen by the store manager putting items in a duffel bag that was in the top of her shopping cart.

She paid for the items in the cart but not the ones in the duffel bag. When confronted by the manager outside of the store, she said: “Oh no, no, no. I’m a mother, I can’t be arrested.”

Police were called and it was discovered that she had taken 48 items worth a total of $213.17.

In court today, O’Brien apologised, saying that what she did “wasn’t right”. She added that she was in a hard place and had no one to turn to.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered a Social Inquiry Report and adjourned sentencing to March 28.

O’Brien was granted $2,000 bail with a like surety.
