Brangman scores wonder goal to deny Zebras

On target: Robinson scored for Zebras at Somerset Cricket Club

Devonshire Cougars were again a thorn in the side of PHC Zebras after striker Chae Brangman scored a sensational equaliser at Somerset Cricket Club last night as the game ended 1-1.

Cougars, who have already beaten Zebras in two finals this season, started slowly as PHC dominated early on.

Zebras were keen to reopen a three-point lead at the top of the table after victories by Robin Hood on Saturday and North Village over Boulevard 3-2 on Tuesday. However, their lead as been cut to just one point.

A draw was a fair result although both teams had good chances to score a winner late in the second half, with Cougars going closest after Brangman wiped out PHC’s lead with a well struck volley.

The ball was played to him on the edge of the box, he flicked the ball up and volleyed superbly into the roof of the net in the 69th minute.

The momentum was with Cougars as Brangman laid on a good chance for substitute Chamari Burns inside the box but he blasted well over.

It was against Williams in the second minute of the match that PHC thought they had a penalty for a handball when a ball into the box bounced and looked to have struck the full back on the hand. However, referee Martin Wyer did not respond to calls of “handball” by the PHC players.

The league leaders did have the ball in the net five minutes later through Marquel Waldron but the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside.

PHC were looking the more likely to score, although Cougars did have their best chance midway through the half when defender Na’eem Griffith slipped and Cashun Brangman pounced before Stefan Dill parried his shot.

At the other end Griffith pushed forward from centre back as a long ball out of the PHC half sent him clear of the Cougars defence before goalkeeper Kioshi Trott got his fingers to the ball as Griffith tried to lob it over his head. Dill made a couple of quick saves to deny Machi Battersbee at the other end after a good break by Cougars opened the PHC defence.

The deadlock was finally broken when a quick break upfield allowed Cecoy Robinson to pounce on an error by Calin Maybury outside the box. Unmarked and with Trott to beat, Robinson kept his composure to score in the 39th minute. However, PHC failed to hold on to the lead, although they had a chance to win the match with the last kick in added time, but substitute Triston Hall blasted over the bar.

n Young Men’s Social Club reclaimed the lead at the top of the First Division with a 6-1 victory over Hamilton Parish in the opening match. Trailing 2-1 to Parish at half-time in their abandoned match on Sunday, the unbeaten leaders made certain there would not be another scare as they led 4-0 at the break.

Clay Darrell scored twice in the sixth and 38th minutes while Saki Tuzo added the second in the ninth and Quadir Maynard another in the 25th.

Tuzo scored his second goal early in the second half to make it 5-0 before Parish pulled a goal back through a Tareek Webb penalty in the 67th minute following a handball.

Nique Armstrong restored Social Club’s five-goal lead with his team’s sixth goal in the 75th minute.
