New spa owner declines questions
After being attacked by the Minister of Health and the chair of the Bermuda Health Council, the owner of Azure Medical Spa will not comment on whether or not his business and staff are licensed.
On Friday, Minister of Health Nelson Bascome along with chair of the Bermuda Health Council, Linda Merritt, issued statements questioning whether the spa was operating with a licence.
Dr. James Fay, owner of Azure and the Paget Dental Group, opened the spa February 22. It offers services including laser hair removal, Botox, facial peels, acne therapy, teeth whitening and more. The spa operates out of the same building as the dentistry.
According to a supplement in last Thursday's The Royal Gazette, Dr. Fay has more than 20 years of cosmetic dental experience.
Between 2005 and 2007, he received certification for laser aesthetics, hair reduction, tattoo removal, treatment of vascular lesions and skin rejuvenation. He is also certified in Botox, dermal fillers, lip injections, microdermabrasion, skin resurfacing and chemical peels.
This newspaper had made several attempts to get in contact with Dr. Fay to see what his side of the story is. It called Azure on Friday and left a message for Dr. Fay but got no response. On Tuesday, this newspaper finally spoke with a receptionist who said Dr. Fay did not want to comment on the allegations.
In the House of Assembly on Friday, Mr. Bascome explained he believed the spa may be "operating outside the scope of their licences".
He said the Ministry was unable to get information on specific plans of the spa.
Mr. Bascome also said he was concerned about Dr. Fay performing such a variety of treatments outside of the dental realm.
Ms Merritt said the health council is interested in ensuring the safety of patients and would like to have been approached by Azure or a representative of the company.
