Bank staff help nab cash snatch suspect
helping to catch an alleged thief.
Yesterday receptionist Ms Donna Place, branch manager Mrs. Valerie Simons, and teller Ms Andrea Davis were the pride of the Bank of Butterfield.
The trio played a big hand in helping Police arrest a man in connection with a cash snatch from a FIFA referee.
The Mexican official, who was here for Bermuda's World Cup clash with El Salvador, lost out while staying at Sonesta Beach Hotel.
He flew off the Island earlier this week after the Bermuda Football Association chipped in to cover his losses.
Police say a man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon over the incident following a tip-off.
The alarm was sounded by the trio from the Bank of Butterfield, well known for its advertising slogan "the bank that puts you first''.
Their suspicions were raised after a man tried to exchange Mexican pesos.
Staff had been put on the alert following news reports of the Sonesta Beach theft.
The Bank of Bermuda in Reid Street were also alerted shortly before the suspect appeared there to try again to exchange the pesos.
Police officers made their arrest after being called round to the bank.
Mr. Colin Furr, general manager of banking with the Bank of Butterfield, told The Royal Gazette yesterday; "We are delighted to help the Police in this way. It was real teamwork.''
