Gunmen targetted Rawlins before his death, court hears
Gunmen shot at Raymond (Yankee) Rawlins and his family prior to his death, but the man accused of murdering him is not implicated, a prosecutor stated yesterday.David Cox, 31, is on trial accused of shooting Mr Rawlins dead on August 9 2010 as the victim walked into the Spinning Wheel nightclub on Court Street, Pembroke. Two gunmen chased him into the club and shot him 16 times. Mr Cox is on trial alone, and denies premeditated murder and using a gun to commit murder.Yesterday, prosecutor Cindy Clarke told the trial of previous shootings affecting Mr Rawlins, 47.“On December 16 2009 the deceased, Raymond Rawlins, was shot at on Court Street. A man other than the defendant has been tried and convicted for that shooting and this defendant was in no way implicated in that offence,” she explained.“On May 23 2009 the deceased’s father and brother were injured in a shooting inside the C&R Discount Store on Court Street. A man other than this defendant has been tried and convicted for his role in that shooting and the defendant was in no way implicated in that offence.”Ms Clarke also referred to evidence that two guns allegedly used by the gunmen in the Rawlins murder have been linked to eight other shootings. The jury heard on Thursday from gun expert Dennis McGuire who examined bullets and cases from the murder scene and compared them to a gun found during the Rawlins investigation, and bullets recovered from other shootings.Mr McGuire uses unique markings etched on bullets and cases as they are fired in order to establish what gun they were shot from.He said shells and cases from the murder scene were linked to a 9mm Luger automatic firearm, which has not been recovered by the police. That firearm is believed to have been used in five other unsolved shootings in Bermuda.According to evidence on Thursday from Detective Constable Vernell Burgess, one case is the double-shooting of Jermain Lovell and Kenneth Caines in the Rubber Tree area of Middletown on November 6 2009.The next are the murders of James Lawes on Dundonald Street, Pembroke, on March 19, 2010 and Kimwandae Walker near Victor Scott Primary School, Pembroke, on April 2 2010.The gun has also been linked to the attempted murder of teenager Michela Outerbridge, injured in a drive-by shooting at Western Stars sports club in Pembroke on April 4 2010 and a firearms incident on March 17 2010 on Curving Avenue, Pembroke, where no one was hurt.Mr McGuire also tested a 38 calibre Rexio revolver found in bushes on East Gate Lane, Pembroke, on December 22 2010, four months after Mr Rawlins was murdered. He told the jury the revolver has been linked to three other gun incidents. Det Con Burgess said those are the attempted murder of Jeremiah Dill on October 4 2010, on Parsons Road, Pembroke, a shooting on October 16 2010 on Overview Hill, Pembroke and the attempted murder of Jari Fischbacher on November 24 2010 on Spanish Point Road, Pembroke.A man has been charged with the attempted murder of Mr Dill.Ms Clarke told the jury in the Cox trial yesterday: “The defendant has not been charged with, and is not implicated in any way in the other shooting incidents linked to the recovered Rexio revolver nor the 9mm Luger pistol.”Defence lawyer John Perry QC agreed the prosecutor should share the facts regarding the previous shootings as they are not in dispute.Prosecutor Takiyah Burgess said during her opening speech in Mr Cox’s trial that the jury may hear of an ongoing feud between rival gangs known as 42 and Parkside. She said they may also hear that Mr Cox is a member of the 42 gang and Court Street is an area that Parkside frequent.Det Con Burgess said on Thursday that gang members often share the same weapons as they don’t have access to multiple firearms. The case against Mr Cox continues.
