Bean hits hat-trick in seven-goal thriller

Star man: Somerset striker Bean

Johnny Bean scored an 86th-minute goal to complete his hat-trick and seal a 4-3 win for Somerset over Devonshire Colts in a thrilling match at Somerset Cricket Club last night.

Colts, conceding four goals for the second time in five days, thought they had earned a share of the points in injury time when substitute D’Andre Wainwright met a well-placed Jomei Bean-Lindo free kick to head past goalkeeper Shaquille Bean but the flag was up for offside.

Bean’s astonishing seventh-minute opener set the tone for the match, scoring into an open goal after Gregory Rose, the Colts goalkeeper put the ball down after he thought Somerset had been blown for offside. However, referee Lionel Cann overruled Tracy Adams’s flag and Bean was quick to respond and round the goalkeeper to score.

Colts equalised in the thirteenth minute from a corner, which was earned when Bean-Lindo’s 30-yard free kick was tipped over the bar by Bean. Defender Matei Isaac stabbed the ball home at the near post.

The visiting side, minus last weekend’s hat-trick hero Kyle Jones for religious reasons, still had goals in them and took the lead in the 39th minute through Eli Smith, only to see Trojans equalise five minutes into the second half when the lively Bean raced onto a long ball into the Colts penalty area and was brought down by Rose. Damon Swan scored from the penalty spot.

Colts were back in front in the 66th minute through Lozendro Symonds’s volley into the top corner. Somerset came back to 3-3 nine minutes later when Bean scored his second goal after Tahj Wade did the work down the left side.

Somerset looked to have blown their chance of victory in the 84th minute when substitute Daunte Woods blasted wide of an open goal after good work by captain Justin Corday who kept the ball in and provide the cross which Rose dropped at Woods’s feet near the edge of the box.

However, Bean produced a spectacular finish when he netted the winner two minutes, heading home at the near post from a Wade corner.

“We can always count on our guys to put in the work for the whole 90 minutes,” said Corday, wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of injured Trevin Ming.

“We always have the heart and it feels good to get another late winner off the hard work.”

Ray Jones, the Colts coach, was disappointed to see his team concede late goals once again. “Defensive errors, inexperience showed up again,” he said. “We’ve got to go back to the drawing board and do some work on the defence.

“In two games, even though we’ve scored nine goals we’ve let in eight. I thought we would leave here with a point but the officials said no. Another player was offside but he wasn’t involved in the play.”
