Seniors enjoy a special tea
Hundreds of seniors came together for a special tea put on by the Bermuda Police Service on Tuesday.
They were treated to a light lunch and entertainment at the Heritage Worship Centre as part of the Police Week 2016 celebrations.
“It brings people together,” 78-year-old Mary Lou Binns, of Devonshire, said. “It’s wonderful and everyone seems to be happy.”
Ms Binns was at the event with a group of friends, including Percylin Caisey, 75, and Sylvia Lightbourne, 78, both from Pembroke.
Ms Caisey and Ms Lightbourne agreed that the camaraderie was a big draw, as was the entertainment provided by the likes of event MC and BPS station duty officer Linda Mienzer.
Being able to socialise with her fellow seniors also bought Catherine Cox, 89, along to the event.
“I just like to be out with the seniors,” she said. “It’s nice to see people you haven’t seen for a long time.”
Nicole Young, a human resources administrator with the BPS and one of the event organisers, told The Royal Gazette: “Today is our day where we give back to the senior citizens.”
She said that around 150 seniors responded to the invitation but about 400 ended up coming.
“Usually we set up for 400 people. We always expect full capacity.”
Ms Young added that the seniors “always say they have a good time”, with the BPS trying to up the ante every year to encourage them to come back.
Gerald Simons and Rickeesha Binns were on hand to provide entertainment, along with DJ Pepe. Commissioner of Police, Michael DeSilva, and senior command staff also made an appearance.
A light lunch consisting of sandwiches, cookies, cakes and drinks was served by BPS officers, Bermuda Reserve Police officers and support staff.
Also on hand to help as part of their community service were students from the Kingdom Academy homeschool.
