Cocktail proceeds to help families

A pair of sister restaurants will be raising funds for two families with young children who have lost a parent.

For the month of September, Rosa’s Cantina and Chopsticks Fusion will be offering the “Purple Promise” cocktail and 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to the families.

“Since September is the month when children go back to school, Rosa’s and Chopsticks felt it was fitting to help two families with young children who lost a parent at a young age,” Lindsay Durham, the Director of Operations and Human Resources for both restaurants, told The Royal Gazette.

“Our first family is the Cumbermack family. Patrina Cumbermack is the widow of Jereme Cumbermack. He lost his life in early 2015 in a motorcycle accident. He left behind his wife and three children.

“Our next family is the Smith family. Nakia Smith is the widower of Kamala Smith. She lost her life to cancer a few months ago. She leaves behind a husband and two young children.”

The cocktail, which contains De Kuyper Blackberry Brandy, Tito’s vodka, lime juice, raspberry purée, simple syrup and is topped with ginger beer, fresh blackberries and lime, was created by restaurant manager Kara Simmons. It was inspired by Mrs Smith’s love of the colour purple, as well as Mr Smith and Mrs Cumbermack’s promise to always keep the memory of their spouses alive.

“We hope everyone can stop by in September to purchase a cocktail in honour of these parents’ promise to the spouse and children,” Ms Durham added.

“Remember it takes a village and these are families in our community.”

The Purple Promise cocktail costs $12, while the virgin version sells for $8 — 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to the families. According to Ms Durham, $2,300 had been raised by Monday. The restaurants hope to raise a total $10,000, so that each family can receive $5,000. A friendly competition between wait staff is under way, with a prize in line for whoever sells the most cocktails, to help reach the goal.

“The public has been very generous,” Ms Durham said, extending a thank you to everyone who has come out and supported the initiative. She also thanked Gosling’s for donating the alcohol for the drink. Neil Mountford, Gosling’s off-premise sales manager, described the cocktail as “delicious”.

“We felt that the cause was worthwhile,” he said. “As Rosa’s is a good client of ours we wanted to support them in their quest.”
