Bermuda’s top middle distance runner Aaron Evans has suffered a hamstring injury which could rule him out of several major events this season.Evans limped out of the 800 metre final at the Southeastern Conference Championships (SEC) in Georgia at the weekend, having set the fastest qualifying time of one minute 49.87 seconds.After Sunday’s race the University of Georgia athlete wrote on his Facebook page: “No regionals, no nationals, no worlds.... Bad decisions, good intentions.”Evans has a busy race schedule lined up over the six months including CAC Senior Championships, World Championships and the Pan Am Games.Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson is hoping Evans’ injury isn’t as serious as his Facebook entry suggests.She said: “I’m hoping that it is not serious as there are several international meets this summer, the CAC Seniors, World Championships and Pan Am Games.”Earlier this year Evans set a new personal best in the indoor 800m, finishing in one minute 48.07 seconds, breaking the University of Georgia’s indoor record held by fellow Bermudian Steve Burgess (1:48.34).Last May he broke the University’s 800m outdoor record, clocking in at 1:47.00, shattering the previous record of 1:47:64 which was a 25-year-old national record also set by Evans’ mentor Burgess.While there was bad news for Evans, his Bulldogs team-mate Latroya Darrell set a new national record at the SEC Championships at the weekend.The University of Georgia athlete finished third in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 13.04 metres.She also recorded jumps of 12.74, 13.04, 12.53, 12.66 and a foul on her final attempt.Clemson University athlete Jasmine Brunson, also competing at the same event, placed third in the long jump with a personal best leap of 6.20m.Also at the weekend, Tyrone Smith finished seventh in the long jump at the Shanghai Diamond League with a leap of 7.86m.
