Economic Development Minister Grant Gibbons has defended Bermuda’s financial reputation on a Chicago radio show looking into the Panama Papers fallout.

Dr Gibbons was interviewed for the morning show The Opening Bell with Steve Grzanich on WGN Radio, geared towards entrepreneurs and investors.

The MP also discussed the island’s global economic contribution, its reinsurance sector, its regulatory environment and the America’s Cup 2017.

Dr Gibbons’ radio chat was part of his visit to the Windy City to represent Bermuda for the AC Louis Vuitton World Series races.

Following his appearance, the minister said: “It was a great opportunity to talk about the contributions that Bermuda makes to the US and global commerce, particularly in the reinsurance sector, and to dispel some myths around Bermuda as an offshore financial centre following the Panama Papers.

“Bermuda has had a strong relationship with the United States over hundreds of years and it was also a good opportunity to reinforce those close historical connections.”
