Outstanding Trott living up to his potential
Nathan Trott produced a string of outstanding performances in goal for West Ham United’s Academy who finished runners-up at the annual ICGT Tournament in Amsterdam yesterday.
The former BAA and Bermuda Under-17 goalkeeper featured in all of West Ham’s fixtures and underlined his potential after keeping four clean sheets in five appearances and conceding only one goal throughout the tournament.
West Ham won all of their group A matches against the tournament host Uitgeest (2-0) and Alkmaar (1-0), both of Holland, and Cruzeiro (1-0), of Brazil, to reach yesterday’s semi-final.
They then beat Greek Panathinaikos in a penalty shoot-out after the teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 after extra-time — the only time that Trott was beaten.
Trott and his West Ham team-mates came up short in the final later in the day, losing on penalties to Atletico Paranaense, of Brazil, after both teams remained goalless after extra-time.
The son of Dwayne Trott, the former Devonshire Colts and St George’s goalkeeper, signed a 2½-year deal at West Ham in January and was granted Fifa approval and international clearance to play for the East London club last month.
Trott made his long-awaited debut in West Ham Academy’s 1-1 home draw with Reading in the Barclay’s Under-18 Premier League group one play-off.
The promising goalkeeper has been thrown in the deep end since his arrival at West Ham, training with the first team, where he has also impressed the coaching staff.
“Even at that level he is as good as any goalkeeper because he has exceptional feet,” Mark Phillips, the West Ham Under-18 coach, said.
“We’ve got seven goalkeepers here, obviously at different age groups, but he is definitely up there as one of the best, without a doubt.
Trott is one of two Bermudian players at West Ham, the other being highly rated striker Djair Parfitt-Williams, who won the Barclay’s Under-21 League Cup with the club’s development squad this month.
n Dale Eve, the Bermuda goalkeeper, has not been offered a deal by Forest Green Rovers after their Vanarama National League play-off final defeat against Grimbsy Town at Wembley Stadium at the weekend.
Eve has been joined by David Pipe, the club captain, James Jennings, Clovis Kamdjo, Delano Sam-Yorke, Brett Williams, Lenny Pidgeley in leaving the club.
The former Dandy Town youth-team player signed for Forest Green until the end of the season after being released by Barclays Premier League team Stoke City in February.
He had a spell on loan at Forest Green in October, playing in the televised 2-1 victory away to Margate in the FA Cup fourth-round qualifying match.
The 6ft 4in goalkeeper has previously had loan spells at Fleetwood Town, Nuneaton Town, Newcastle Town and Congleton.
