Man, 39, admits police officer assault

A Pembroke man has admitted assaulting a police officer and violently resisting arrest on Friday in Paget.

This morning, Magistrates’ Court heard that Mark Wilson was travelling east at 60kmh along Middle Road, when he was spotted at midday by police conducting speeding checks.

After being pulled over, the 39-year-old labourer was initially compliant with the officers, talking with them while sat on his bike with the engine off.

However, at 12.04pm Wilson suddenly pushed his cycle backwards, knocking one officer in the process, and tried to escape the scene.

He was pulled off his bike and a scuffle ensued, during which time one officer received an injury to his left wrist.

The defendant was eventually tasered after being placed under arrest and warned to stop struggling.

Afterwards, Wilson expressed his apologies for this incident, adding: “I don’t know why I done this.”

The defendant’s legal representative said: “He just lost his head and did something he recognises was thoughtless and useless.”

She asked Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo for a conditional discharge, given that Wilson apologised at the time and that the officer’s injuries were minor.

However, Mr Tokunbo replied that this option was “out of the question”, given the defendant’s two previous convictions for similar offences.

He fined Wilson a total of $800 and ordered him to pay by May 31 or face 80 days in prison.
