Variety of events will mark cancer month

The Bermuda TB, Cancer and Health Awareness will launch their fifth annual Women's Health and Breast Cancer Awareness Month this week with a series of events.

The activities will begin on Wednesday with a "Stepping Out" 3K and 5K fun walk designed to raise funds for the building of the Bermuda TB, Cancer and Health Association's Cancer Resource Centre on Point Finger Road. Work is expected to begin on that project early in 2002 and last year the charity surpassed its goal of raising $100,000 which went towards the million dollar building.

The walk, which attracted 800 participants last year, will start at the new ACE Global headquarters at 6 p.m. and finish on Front Street during Harbour Nights.

Registration packs are available at the Bermuda TB, Cancer and Health Association, The Sports Locker and Sportseller or the walkers can register between 5 and 6 p.m. at BF&M on the night of the walk.

BF&M are again the sponsors of the Women's Health and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Walkers should bring their completed registration form along with their pledges to the registration table at BF&M next Wednesday between 5 and 6 p.m.

Next Friday will be Breast Cancer Denim Day when, with a $5 donation, employees can wear denim to work. At school, children wearing denim are asked to donate $2 which will help support the Breast Health and Early Detection Breast Cancer programme. To participate in the Breast Cancer Denim Day contact Saundra Cowen at 297-4252.

Again a Fashion Show and Tea will take place as part of breast cancer awareness, scheduled for Sunday, October 7 at St. John's Church Hall. The event is hosted by the "Just Between Us" Breast Cancer Support Group. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from "Just Between Us" members or by contacting Marian Holland at 295-3051.

Other activities during the month include a Breast Cancer Forum on TV, scheduled for October 25 at 8 p.m. on ZFB/ZBM and a "Celebration of Life" Sunday Service on October 28.

All churches have been asked to participate in remembering those who have passed and those who are living daily with breast cancer, as well as for the future health and well being of all women.

The guest panellists for the forum include Dr. Larry Shulman, vice chairman of Clinical Services Department of Adult Oncology at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston; Dr. Jean Walters, Bermuda's new Oncologist and surgeon Dr. Terrance Elliott.

Also on the panel will be Rachel Andrade, a registered nurse and education officer at Bermuda TB, Cancer and Health, and Dr. Marion Watlington who practices internal medicine and alternate therapies and wellness. Two breast cancer survivors are also due to appear on the programme.

Also, during the month of October a collection of photographs of women who have died from breast cancer in Bermuda will be on display at City Hall. The pictures have been submitted by family and friends in remembrance of their loved ones.
