Brangman nets winner on last kick of the game
A large crowd was in attendance and the teams responded with seven goals, including a last-minute winner for Somerset as the first All-Star soccer match between St. George's and Somerset old boys at Garrison Field met with overwhelming success on Saturday.
Somerset emerged 4-3 winners of a thrilling contest, having led 3-0 in the first 20 minutes on goals from Mel Roberts, Arthur (Bubba) Tucker and Richard (Dirt) Simmons.
However, the hosts came back with dogged determination as Charlie Fox and Noel (Sub) Smith replied before the interval to make it 3-2 at the half. Randy Richardson's first half penalty miss for the east enders proved costly, though Somerset's narrow lead was still erased in the second half when Fox scored in the second half to make it 3-3.
The match came to a thrilling end when George Brangman netted for Somerset with the last kick of the game. David (Goat) Brangman played in goal for St.
George's in the second half and Dennis Wainwright in the first half.
For Somerset, Clyde (Tango) Burgess was in goal in the first half and `Stickman' Galloway in the second half.
Plaques made by prisoner Chester Johnson were presented afterwards to referee Carlyle (Pee Wee) Crockwell, Peter Williams, Sr. and Gladstone Burchall for their contributions to the game. Proceeds collected will aid the youth programmes of both clubs.
Next year Somerset will host the game in the west end.
SNOOKER SNO Sandys Sports Club I finally got their revenge against National Sports Club last Wednesday in the finals of the snooker league play-off.
After a nail-biting evening of snooker they emerged the victors with a final score of 4-2 over their opponents.
In the first game "Sticks'' Henderson defeated Kyle Thompson on the pink ball after a very close match, putting Sandys one ahead.
Lawrence DeSilva and Brian Walker then did battle with DeSilva coming out on top, making the score 2-0.
In the third frame Paul Charleton managed to pull one back for Nationals by defeating Tony DeSilva to make the score 2-1. However, the last frame of singles went to Sandys with Greg Falzone beating Steve Pantry.
This meant Nationals needed wins in both doubles in order to force a play-off and they got off to a good start when Pantry and Walker beat Timmy Simons and Henderson.
But in the last game Thompson and Charleton were unable to best DeSilva and Falzone mainly because of some superb potting of colours by DeSilva. This performance also earned Lawrence DeSilva man-of-the-match honours.
In the quarter-finals of the Bermuda Open singles all games ended with a 2-0 result with Charleton beating Tyler Moniz, Stevie Roberts beating Tony DeSilva, Brian Walker beating D.C. Coyle and Lawrence DeSilva ousting Dave McLean.
This sets the stage for what should be two very good semi-final fames with Charleton taking on Stevie Roberts at Old Colony Club and DeSilva playing Brian Walker at Queens. Both games take place on Tuesday, April 4, at 7.30 p.m.
TABLE TENNIS PP Spurred by the outstanding talents of Corey Berkeley, Righties easily downed Lefties 8-3 during Saturday's Charity Challenge.
Berkeley went a perfect 3-0 in singles, including defeats of former Bermuda number one Dexter Smith and Hasan Durham -- a team-mate of Berkeley's at The Centre -- and for good measure added a pair of doubles victories.
Adding wins for the Righties were Nick Frost, with two and Roger Bonne (one).
For the southpaws Smith triumphed on two occasions, while Durham took solace in a single win of his own.
