'Empire State of Mind' is essential and so–is a K for 'Sir Clyde'

Happy Holidays Bermuda! Can you believe that its Christmas Time already? Earlier this week I read in this fine newspaper an article suggesting that Clyde Best should be Knighted! I couldn't agree more; the man should be called Sir Clyde (Bunny) Best. We missed an opportunity since we just had a Royal Visit. What better way and time for Sir Clyde to be thus awarded by the Queen, than during her visit to Bermuda? But, as is often the case, we missed the boat. More on this after the Top 20.

Now back to this week's word – Sir Clyde (Bunny) Best.We should have had a special ceremony at Government House or the Cabinet Office wherein Sir Clyde was officially Knighted during the Royal Visit. Clyde Best was a trailblazer in British Football and he is from Bermuda. Most people don't realise what this man went through; even as I type, I have no clue. To speak about it and write about it is one thing; but to live it every day of your life for over a decade is something that is beyond our wildest dreams and worst nightmares.

From now, until the Man is actually Knighted,I will forever call him Sir Clyde Best, whether he is officially Knighted or not. On behalf of Bermuda and Great Britain, since I am a British Subject and am using my rights as a British Subject, I hereby officially apologise to Sir Clyde that nobody in Bermuda or Britain has 'gone to bat' for him, written, petitioned and approached Buckingham Palace or wherever you request Knighthoods, on his behalf.

If you have ever met Sir Clyde, you will know that he is a consummate gentleman and very humble in every sense of the word; and the fact that he has not been Knighted will be of less concern to him than it is to others. Well, at least publicly that is the impression that one gets when in his presence. We don't know what he feels deep down inside, in his heart.

What we do know, is that Sir Clyde was one of the first black players to make it as a professional footballer in the English Top Football division. To really understand what an accomplishment this is, you have to understand that very few other Bermudians have accomplished that feat and nobody else, including our beloved Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne, lasted as long at the top division. So, no offense to The Goat and Kyle, but if they were good, he had to be great. Also, imagine the fact that out of every 300,000 high school football stars with professional footballing dreams; probably only one will actually make it as a professional footballer.

Sir Clyde did it at a time when racism was more rampant, in your face, overt and accepted in the world, and most definitely in football in England. Can you imagine the fans and supporters of the team you're playing for calling you names like the N word, Monkey, Gorilla, Ugly Black Boy, etc.? So if the fans of the team for which you scored goals and played called you such names, imagine what fans of the opposing teams called him!

Sir Clyde Best must have had thick skin to deal with all that abuse. He was an accomplished, gifted athlete; blessed with a big, strong, body, a huge heart, speed, grace, good in the air, able to shoot with both feet, tricky, deceptively quick and a good, decent man. Those are usually too many qualities to be held by one person, but he had them all. If you think about Didier Drogba, you might have an idea of how big, fast and strong he was. He was also a very good cricket player who at 16 played Cup Match for Somerset and probably could have played professional cricket, for the Queen's Team.

Its not too late. Let's do it whilst the man is still living and give him the credit he is due. The fact that legends of the game like Cyril Regis are calling for him to be Knighted is a true testament to the fact that it must be done. I say we start calling him that anyway and hopefully, maybe one day soon, we will have a Bermudian officially named Sir Clyde (Bunny) Best! Peace be with you ... DJLT.
