Manders, Durham have Rangers in a spin
Western Stars 112-7 In the space of just 31 minutes the Western Stars' spin pair of Arnold Manders and Hasan Durham claimed seven wickets between them to rip apart Southampton's batting in this Premier Division Overs clash at Southampton Oval.
But Sunday's match proved anything but easy for the defending champions and current league leaders as Rangers quickly had them on the ropes before brothers Andre and Anthony Manders pulled off victory.
Stars suffered the worst of starts, losing two wickets in the third over and one each in the fourth and eighth overs to fall to 19-4 with two of their most reliable batsmen, Treadwell Gibbons and Albert Steede, among those dismissed.
Gary Crofton and Quinton Sherlock both snatched two wickets.
In 12 overs Stars recovered to 68 thanks to a stand of 49 between Andre Manders and Cleon Scotland. But it ended in bizarre fashion, Scotland hooking Janeiro Tucker for four but also hitting his wicket as he fell backwards.
In quick time three more wickets tumbled, including a dubious run out against Durham at a crucial stage.
Durham's dismissal made it 81-7 but that would be the last wicket to fall as the Manders brothers dug in to share in an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 31 which sealed victory. Andre stroked seven fours and a six, which brought up his 50. He was the only Stars batsman in double figures.
Stars got a big break on 90-7 when Anthony Manders hooked a short delivery from Janeiro Tucker straight to Sheridan Ming at square leg. The dropped chance proved costly.
Sherlock, who had earlier played in the Bermuda Amateur Strokeplay golf championships, finished with two for 36, Crofton two for 16 from eight overs with four maidens and Tucker two for 22.
Tucker was the high man for Rangers with 41 but after sharing in a stand of 60 for the third wicket with David Stoneham (21), the middle order offered little resistance against the spin of Manders and Durham as the score quickly slumped from 89-3 to 106-9 in little over half an hour.
Durham finished with five for 26 from 10 overs while Manders claimed two for 18 from 10 overs.
Willow Cuts 150-9 St.George's 87-2 Tight bowling by St. George's combined with some brisk scoring from Jason Lewis enabled the East Enders to beat Willow Cuts on run rate at Somerset.
St. George's had batted 26 overs when a heavy downpour ended the match at 6.15 p.m. Their run rate worked out as 3.346 from the 26 overs while Cuts had a run rate of 3.00 off 50 overs.
The key factor for St. George's was their bowling after they had won the toss and sent Cuts in. All six of the bowlers proved economical with none giving up more than 30 runs.
Mark Ray claimed four for 23 from 10 overs, Herbie Bascome three for 23 off 10 with five maidens and David Adams two for 28 off 10. Gregg Foggo, Kenny Phillip and Eugene Foggo failed to take a wicket as Gregg Foggo gave up 25 in 10 overs and Phillip and Eugene Foggo 20 and 26 respectively, both from five overs.
High man for Cuts was opener Dwayne Basden with 38 while captain Dexter Basden scored 32, the pair adding 72 for the second wicket after Jermaine Warner departed for 11 when the score was on 13.
Jason Lewis hit five fours and a six in his 40 not out, putting on 37 for the first wicket with Eugene Foggo and 40 for the second with captain Clay Smith.
Cleveland 93 Police 97-1 Peter Philpott struck 41 not out and Dwayne Leverock snatched three for just one run as Police handed Cleveland a nine-wicket defeat at Police Field. Led by former Cleveland player Philpott, Police required just 20.4 overs to reach their winning target. Philpott and Leverock enjoyed an opening stand of 44 with Leverock scoring 23.
Cleveland had just two players who reached double figures. Anthony Bascome was high man with 35 while Courtney Trott added 19.
The pair dug their team out of a huge hole, putting on 53 after the side had struggled to just 17 for the loss of four wickets.
Leverock's sensational bowling came off 2.3 overs, including a maiden. Michael Jackman had two for 19 off seven overs, Freston Hurdle two for 22 off seven overs and Ferdinand Thorne two for 28 off eight overs.
Bailey's Bay 170 Devonshire Rec. 144-6 Rain interrupted play at 6.15 p.m. at Devonshire Rec. on Sunday leaving the umpires' calculators to declare the home side as winners by the narrowest of margins.
Umpires Randy Butler and Wilbur Pitcher worked it out that Bay's run rate (170 all out divided by 50 overs even though they did not use up all their overs) was 3.40 compared to 3.4123 for Devonshire Rec. whose 144 came in 42.2 overs.
Butler stressed that the regulations required Bay's run rate to be worked out on the full 50 overs because they were dismissed within that allotted total.
They actually batted only 38.1 overs.
Devonshire batted for 41.2 of their 50 overs but because their innings was not complete their run rate was calculated by the number of overs they batted.
Rain ended play with the home side 27 runs short of outright victory with four wickets in hand, including that of skipper Anthony Amory who was on 44 not out. Also among the runs for Devonshire were Donald Norford with 34, Omar Amory 23 and Dexter Smith who scored 11 while facing 75 balls.
Dennis Pilgrim led the Bay bowlers with three for 44 off 10 overs, with three maidens.
Skipper Charlie Marshall led the Bay batsmen with a flourishing 53 off 67 balls, striking seven fours and two sixes. Glenn Blakeney followed with 43 (four fours and four sixes) off 46 balls while Desmond Crockwell hit 23 and Roger Trott 10.
Omar Amory took two for five off 1.1 overs, Winston Trott had two for 26 off 10 overs, including two maidens, while Anthony Edwards had two for 32 off seven overs and Anthony Amory two for 36 off six overs.
