Labour Minister the Hon. J. Irving Pearman announced the move yesterday along with Sen. Maxwell Burgess and Bermuda Hotel Association president Mr. David Dodwell.

It was part of Government's "Blueprint for the Future''. One of the first steps, he said, would be redirecting resources in the Ministry and expanding its job placement office.

Job fields filled mostly by non-Bermudians, such as landscaping and office cleaning, would be identified and efforts made to train Bermudians to take over.

And job seekers would be invited into the Ministry to discuss their goals and receive advice on acquiring the necessary skills.

Mr. Pearman said Government's mission was to: "Establish a process by which all Bermudians will be competing and participating on equal terms in an expanding economy and job market.'' Sen. Maxwell Burgess said the '90s were "uncertain times'' and Government was committed to helping Bermudians "retrain and re-tool''.

Mr. Dodwell noted the world was now Bermuda's competition -- no longer just the Caribbean and Florida.

He said Bermuda had an excellent hotel college and Bermudians should take advantage.

Mr. Pearman said the United Bermuda Party would also meet its commitment to the Bermudian workforce by: Publishing a guide together with the business community of skills and jobs Bermuda will need in the next decade so youngsters can make informed education choices.

Putting in force a new Code of Employment Ethics and Practice by June, 1994.

Keeping a moratorium on discretionary grants of Bermuda status, "except for those with close Bermuda family ties''.

Reviewing and better publicising Government's tender policy and working with the private sector to ensure contracts are awarded fairly.

Revamping the Small Business Development Corporation.

Tightening up the link between granting work permits and the training of Bermudians.
