Lone sailor to lecture on women?s heart health issues
Lone yachtswoman and nurse Moe Roddy will be giving a talk on heart disease at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute starting at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Ms. Roddy?s presentation will outline and discuss the devastating statistics on the disease as well as precautions and preventative measures women can take to arm themselves.
Also included at Saturday?s event from 9 a.m. ? 10 a.m., will be free blood sugar and blood pressure screenings.
Ms Roddy, an operating room nurse assisting with open-heart surgery at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island is due in Bermuda this week after voyaging solo across 635 miles of Atlantic in this year?s Bermuda race in which competitors sail from Newport to Bermuda alone and then return to Newport with a partner.
The name of her vessel is ? the international insignia used to empower and inspire women and their families to learn about heart disease and to make changes in their lifestyles to effectively reduce the ever-escalating mortality rate.
The number one cause of death in women is heart disease worldwide ? a trend which is emerging here, according to a press release from the Bermuda Heart Foundation.
Flanagan?s opens smoke free bar
Instead of having to squint through the clouds of smoke to watch a football match, Flanagan?s bar patrons will now be able to relax in a smoke-free setting in the newly reopened sports bar.
Owner Mick Adderley, who banned smoking several weeks ago at his Front Street establishment, said the sports bar, renamed ?Legends? will now serve light snacks and appetisers.
Although he admitted the move had affected his business, Mr. Adderley said it had made the bar a much more pleasant place to enjoy a drink for patrons and employees without the fumes of smoke. ?We feel it?s coming in the future so we have made the move now,? he said. ?Many of our patrons were complaining about the high density of smoke. For a health point of view this is positive for patrons who are concerned about their health.
The Front Street bar is a popular spot for watching NASCAR races, the NFL and European football matches.
Last month, Health Minister Patrice Minors revealed plans to restrict smoking in public places such as bars and restaurants. Legislation could be tabled by the end of the year. Philip Barnett, head of the Chamber of Commerce Restaurant Division, has said that most bar and restaurant owners would support a ban.

Crawl Post Office changes schedule
Crawl Post Office will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. without closing for lunch from next Tuesday so people can conduct business over their lunch breaks.
Postmaster General Mr. George Outerbridge said: ?We are excited about these expanded hours at the Crawl Post Office. In the past the office was closed over the lunch period from 11.30 p.m. until 1 p.m.
?That did not give our customers adequate time to complete their business. This was a source of some concern and I am pleased to be able to offer these expanded hours as a response and a solution.?
