Answerable for the past

Dear Sir,With reference to Mark Emmerson’s comments in today’s edition (RG, February 20, 2016) about my letter, which appeared in the February 15 edition, it should be borne in mind that “the Bermuda Government” is a continuing legal entity, whichever political party may happen to be in power. Hence my original comments, which were in relation to the as-yet-unsubstantiated allegations by an existing Cabinet Minister, Michael Fahy, of past improper conduct by the Government in the 1960s and 1970s. Today’s government is formally answerable for any illegal behaviour by its predecessors. JONATHAN LAND EVANS
