Young film-makers explore black racism
A series of films by young Bermudians explores social issues affecting Bermuda including racism within the black community and youth violence.
One of the films, titled Complexions, has been selected to be screened at the Bermuda International Film Festival next month.
The films are being created by NeoApex — a production company made up of young Bermudians. The first they created was Confessions last year, exploring youth violence in Bermuda, and Complexions looks into how people of different shades within the black community are treated differently.
NeoApex producer Dwayne Robinson told The Royal Gazette: “The hot topic lately is racism but we wanted to focus on racism within the black community.
“Complexions illustrates the way that people discriminate so far as shades of black — you have light-skinned and dark-skinned. With Complexions, we were looking at it as a film that would strike home with the Bermudian public more than the others.
“A lot of us come from broken households and we live in the same house as our siblings. My aunties are different shades and you can sometimes see how there is a bit of a bias. You see the division — this film illustrates that there shouldn’t be a division.”
Complexions will make its debut at the Bermuda Film Festival, which runs from March 4 to 11.
“We are super-excited they accepted it, it was like a dream for us to have one of our films good enough to be entered,” said Mr Robinson. “Hopefully it will lead to bigger and brighter things for the team.
“We want to become a professional production team. Whatever the NeoApex’s artists write is based on emotions or take on a certain social issues. We take that content and turn it into short films.
“We specialise in social issues within the community and the world. It is important because I believe Bermuda looks at certain social issues more than others and we as a community tend to look away and focus on the big ones.”
Other films created by NeoApex include Stranger of Mine with Mauricka Bradshaw Edness and Moments with Raushan Darrell.
