Poignant Cancer Day tribute to husband

So in love: Sharon Bassett with her late husband Howard on their wedding day

Sharon Bassett, together with thousands across Bermuda, will fall silent for 100 seconds at noon today as the island marks World Cancer Day.

It will be an especially poignant moment for the mother of two because her husband Howard is one of the 100 people that succumbed to the disease in 2014 represented by the 100 seconds.

Mr Bassett, a popular bartender at The Fairmont Southampton, died of lung cancer at the age of 62 on February 22, 2014 — almost two years to the day that countries across the globe will stop to mark World Cancer Day.

“It’s an important day and an important moment,” said Mrs Bassett. “I will do my best to be at City Hall at midday if my work permits or I will observe the 100 seconds’ silence in the office.

“It’s a very good idea and I hope everyone acknowledges it because a lot of people are affected by cancer.”

Today’s events to mark World Cancer Day have been orchestrated by Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, PALS, Friends of Hospice and the Bermuda Hospitals Board and will begin at about 11.30am at City Hall. Hamilton’s town crier will announce the start and end of the 100 seconds of silence, while volunteers will also be placed around the city holding signs asking people to join in on the 100 seconds of silence.

“World Cancer Day 2016 is a chance to reflect on what everyone can do to reduce the impact of this devastating disease, now, and for the future,” said Tara Curtis, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre Executive Director.

“We ask that everyone take 100 seconds out of their day and reflect on what action you, your organisation and your community can do to make a difference and inspire others. We want this to be a springboard for positive change in our community and to start a conversation.”

The organisers of today’s events have urged residents to show their participation in World Cancer Day by using the hashtag #100secondsofsilence on social media.
