New imaging available at cancer charity
Innovative technology for breast cancer screening has been added to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s toolkit.
The charity said it became the first provider on the island to use contrast-enhanced mammography, which launched at the BCHC on June 9.
It added that CEM helps radiologists “distinguish between normal breast tissue and areas requiring further investigation, often delivering greater clarity and confidence in the diagnostic process”.
The centre explained: “The technology combines a standard mammogram with a contrast agent administered through a small intravenous injection.
“The contrast highlights areas of increased blood flow within the breast, helping radiologists identify abnormalities that may not be as clearly visible on conventional imaging alone.”
Paul Risk, a BCHC radiologist, said: “Our goal has always been to ensure that people in Bermuda have access to the highest quality cancer care without unnecessary barriers.
“This technology allows us to provide more advanced imaging, reduce uncertainty for patients and in some cases reach answers more quickly, helping patients and their families move forward with confidence.”
He added: “By bringing this technology to Bermuda, we are providing patients with access to advanced diagnostic capabilities that previously may not have been available on island.”
A CEM screening is similar to that of a standard mammogram and can be completed in ten minutes.
Members of the public can visit cancer.bm or speak to their physician to learn more about CEM or BCHC’s other imaging services.
