Young musicians delight Walkabout crowds

Sound of music: Bermuda High School musicians performing for the National Trust Walkabout

Last Friday my friend Addy and I, along with other musicians from Bermuda High School, performed at St Peter’s Church in St George during the National Trust Walkabout.

Four hundred years ago one of my ancestors, Christopher Carter, came to St George’s on a ship called the Plough and helped to build St Peter’s, so I was very excited to be performing there.

“We were both very nervous when we saw all the people sitting in the pews waiting to hear us, but our teacher Dr Derek Tully told us just to concentrate on the music,” said Laura, “and the audience would enjoy it!”

“I was nervous as well,” said Addy, “but playing alongside my friend Laura really helped. We played first of all a piece called Jolly Old St Nicolas and everyone applauded.

“We were not as nervous when we played our second piece called Jingle Bells,“ said Laura, “and we got another round of applause for that!”

We also had with us Mrs Sally Crawford’s handbell choir and Mrs Carolann Amjath’s Primary choir and they got lots of applause as well. Our senior musicians, with their violins, flutes and clarinets performed a piece called O Holy Night and Holly Jolly Christmas.

At the end of the evening the audience joined all of us in song as we played The First Noel.

We really enjoyed our first concert at St Peter’s. I think my ancestors would be pleased at our performance.
