MSA begins drive for funds

A private Catholic school is offering beneficiaries the chance to name its auditorium, playing field and science lab.

Mount Saint Agnes Academy has launched a campaign to raise $5 million to pay off a debt and upgrade its building and facilities.

The school ? which has 460 students aged five to 18 ? hopes to raise the cash over the next five years through donations from organisations and individuals. Two million dollars has already been pledged.

Throughout May the school will be contacting alumni, supporters and friends of the school to request donations.

To name its auditorium or playing field the school would be looking for a $1 million donation and $500,000 for the science lab.

The $5 million will be used to pay off an outstanding $1.5 million debt for a loan which the school, on Dundonald Street, Hamilton City, took out to buy land for a playing field.

The cash will also be used for new science and computer facilities, a building upgrade, assistance with tuition fees and staff development.

The campaign is being led by Belco president Garry Madeiros, the president of the school?s board of governors and a former student .

He said: ?The campaign?s theme, Investing Together for Tomorrow, reflects our commitment to continue and improve upon the legacy of quality education the school has provided for 115 years.?

Principal Jim Silcott said: ?The money you spend today towards Mount Saint Agnes Academy ensures a safe, efficient place for our students to go to school. We don?t want the fanciest school on the Island, just the best one.?
