Bucci crowned high school MVP
National team member Ian Bucci was voted the high school volleyball boy's player of the year by coaches of all high school sides across Island earlier this week.
The Warwick Academy student had a stellar season for his school, leading by example with his desire and determination.
Jon Gazzard, coach of the Saltus boy's high school team, hailed Bucci for his superb performances.
"Ian was the boy's player as the year for a number of reasons," said Gazzard.
"First and foremost I'd say because of his interest and desire in the sport of volleyball in Bermuda.
"Ian is now a member of the Bermuda men's national volleyball team, which says a lot in terms of his ability and age.
"Secondly, his performances on the court with and against his peers. He stands out as a leader on his team and is obviously known by other coaches and players as the guy to look out for."
One down note for Bucci is that he is unable to the collect Bermuda Volleyball Association's (BVA) scholarship as he is a high school senior.
As a result he is not eligible to win the $1,000 scholarship, which was awarded to Brian Amano of Mount Saint Agnes.
MSA coach Bruce Sinclair was ecstatic his player won the scholarship, claiming his competitive nature and willingness to learn were just a few of the reasons he was deserving of the award. "As Brian matures he has become easier and easier to coach," said Sinclair.
"He wants to win so he wants to learn.
"His competitiveness has been contagious, as my other new players are starting to be more interested in the game.
"I think that he won the award because of his determination.
"Each and every game he gives it his all.
"He is able to keep his head in the game and rise above challenges that a young team like ours faces."
