Ashfold bags a brace as Onions stay ahead on goal difference

MR Onions still top the Commercial A league on goal difference, ahead of Dandy Town Roots, after beating BAA 4-0 at home on Saturday.

The visitors started the better in a game which kicked off in atrocious conditions but Onions took the lead against the run of play when a long Nigel Forrester free-kick was crossed back into the box and Matt Ashfold showed great composure to control and finish. Further chances in the first half were few and far between as the strong wind and driving rain dominated.

The second half saw conditions improve which gave way to a more open game. Onions got the all important second as Forrester volleyed a corner high into the opposition's net and Ashfold claimed his second of the game after a long Chris Sharpe free kick wasn't properly cleared. Further uncertain defending saw a right wing corner drop kindly in the box for Tindall to complete the scoring.

Meanwhile reigning champions Dandy Town Roots lie just behind on goal difference after picking up a default win over newcomers Somerset Extros who have yet to pick up a point.

North Village Rams and Key West Rangers shared the points in a scoreless game which saw the ball hit the woodwork several times.

Robin Hood overcame Lobster Pot with a 2-0 win with close season signing Steve Simons grabbing a goal in each half.

And it was honours even in the Tuff Dogs versus Valley encounter with McDonald Simmons getting a brace for visitors Valley and Miguel Pererira and Carlos Lopes on target for Dogs.

In Commercial B Group Two action St. George's All-Stars recorded their second victory of the season in a 6-1 rout of a nine-man Vasco team. All-Stars were finding it difficult to make the best of their numerical advantage in the rain but finally scored in the first half courtesy of a Carlos Greaves goal that was followed by strikes from Stevie Dickinson, and Casey Burgess. Vasco remained lively and had their chances including a missed penalty so found themselves down 3-0 at the break. Second-half action was played in a steady downpour however more All-Star goals followed highlighted by Dickinson's two to complete his hat-trick and another goal from Burgess before he lost out on a hat-trick of his own when he completely missed the target from the penalty spot. Earlier Vasco scored a consolation goal via Duarte DeFrias.

PHC picked up their second walk-over win on the trot - this time over St. David's - while Somerset Bridge Peskies also had that dubious honour when Hamilton Parish were unable to field a side.

In Commercial B Group Two Devonshire Rec. Lions nothched a 6-1 victory in a visit to Dockyard Falcons courtesy of a Philip Clarke hat-trick and goals from Dennis Williams, Wali Saalam and Gary Mallory. Prospect/Fire beat Pest Control 4-0 while MR Onions picked up a walk/over against Wolves who turned upwith just four men.
