Fire guts teen girl?s bedroom

A St. David?s family escaped unhurt from their burning home in the early hours yesterday after a fire in a bedroom caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.

The fire started just before 4 a.m. at the Fox family home on St. Luke?s Road in St. David?s.

No one was injured in the fire but Tiara Raynor, 15, who was sleeping with her grandmother Eglantine Fox in the adjacent bedroom, lost her all her furniture, clothing and personal items.

Fire officials do not know the cause of the fire, but the family believe it was caused by a fault in the electrical wires.

Yesterday however, the Fox family were grateful that they were all alive and well despite the extensive smoke damage which has made their home temporarily unliveable.

The walls in Ms Raynor?s bedroom are completely black with smoke and only a few shards of glass remained in the windows.

Her mother Wendy Fox said luck and a higher being had taken care of her daughter.

?The things we lost are things that you can get back but you can never get back a life. Just thinking about it makes me so upset, if it had happened the night before when I was in the house and I told my daughter to sleep in her own room after we had an argument I wouldn?t have a daughter today,? she said.

A Bermuda Fire Service spokesman said fire fighters received the call at 3.56 a.m.

Five fire fighters and two vehicles rushed to put out the flames, however, the home was so heavily smoke logged that the service took up to 40 minutes using a ventilation system.

Mrs. Fox said she awoke on Wednesday morning with her grand daughter to the smell of smoke. ?We ran outside quickly, I was terrified its so upsetting this has happened but I thank the Lord that we are ok. It is just so sad, it was a beautiful room and now its all gone.?

The family complimented the work of the fire fighters and Mrs. Fox said they put out the flames in a ?matter of minutes.?

The Fox family has extended an invitation for anyone who wishes to make donations to call 799-1551. Ms Fox asked if a member of the public has a storage container they could use to temporarily store the furniture and belongings which must be removed from the home as it is power washed. The estimated cost of the fire is $15,000.
