Govt. plans 330 rental properties

Government revealed further details of its housing programme yesterday as it tries to start work on 330 new rental units over the next 30 months.

Works and Engineering and Housing Minister David Burch said the Perimeter Lane project in Pembroke will be first.

This project includes the construction of 12 one-bedroom units, 16 two-bedroom units and ten three-bedroom units resulting in an additional 38 units.

The Bermuda Land Development Company will start work on the Old Naval Hospital at Southside.

This project will deliver 40 one-bedroom units, 40 two-bedroom units, and 40 three-bedroom units which will contribute 120 units in total to house both small and large families.

?Most likely they will be for rent,? said Lt. Col. Burch.

In addition, construction will begin on the 200-unit Harbourside mixed housing development with 100 affordable units already having been awarded.

In the west the redevelopment of Victoria Row and Albert Row in Dockyard will add another 20 two-bedroom rental units for Bermudians in need.

The West End Development Corporation will also start work on 25 one-bedroom units and 26 two-bedroom units at the North Basin. The Victualling Yard in Dockyard will also see the development of 16 one-bedroom units, 16 two-bedroom units, and 16 three bedroom units.

Lt. Col. Burch said the concept had been around for a long time but had been snagged on 21-year lease which he hopes to soon get extended by Cabinet to something developers can work with.

But that requires legislation which is not among among the bills listed in the Throne Speech.

?I am hoping we will be able to get it in. I think most of the work has been done but it hasn?t made it to Cabinet yet although there is a general feeling of support.?

Speaking about Government?s general approach to housing he said: ?Heretofore much of the funding has not been allocated.?

But he is working on pushing for more funds in the budget. He added: ?We are on the express train to delivery.?

Work will also commence on a night shelter and rooming house facility for 200 persons where the current Salvation Army hospital shelter is located.

Two Government owned houses will also come down to make room for the expanded facility.

Residents of the facility will be provided with quality programmes to develop the skills required to adapt to independent living so that they can contribute to society.

An expanded facility at building 632 in Southside will allow families needing emergency housing to stay together. Currently that site bars fathers and children over a certain age.

?The plan is build an additional facility that addresses the typical family ? mother, father, boy, girl of whatever age.?

Looking further down the line Lt. Col Burch said he planed to sell 52 units in Boaz Island to sitting tenants or first time home buyers to free up funds for further housing projects in the Dockyard.
