Drugs test: Youth team given the all-clear
intensive drug testing procedure with flying colours, according to Bermuda Football Association general secretary David Sabir.
Sabir made note of the fact on the eve of the International Youth Tournament which kicks off at National Stadium this evening with two matches.
With quality competition from defending champions Glasgow Rangers of Scotland, FC Porto of Portugal and a US Olympic developmental team, Sabir said the BFA had high expectations for what will be the second annual event.
But he was particularly pleased with the success of the drug testing.
"The BFA, in accordance with the Athletes' Assistance Programme, mainly its drug policy, have had the players tested and we are happy to report that all of them have conformed and have passed the policy and are all eligible to play in the tournament,'' said Sabir.
"We are very pleased that the message is clearly that our youngsters do not wish to use illegal drug substances, but rather if you give them the opportunity to represent themselves and their country with well thought out programmes, we believe their use of drugs will be diminished.
"Hats off to all of the parents and the players who are backing the BFA's firm drug policy stand and our overall programme. Now we are looking for spectators, players and the public at large to support us in big numbers by coming out and witnessing the matches.'' Following opening ceremonies at National Stadium at 6.00 p.m., Rangers and the US team get the action underway at 7.00 after which hosts Bermuda go against FC Porto.
The BFA have extended free invitations to summer day camp students and many other children.
"We are urging parents to bring their children to the games as it will be a good time for youth sports in this country,'' said Sabir.
Last year's inaugural tournament featured under-19 players, but this time the event is for under-15s.
Bermuda's squad is as follows: Zane Hendrickson, Paul Fox, Raymond Beach, Nadir Wade, Georon Trott, Shannon Raynor, Tafari Mallory, Kiman Simmons, Marlon Dill, Tarik Jennings, Justin Lambert, Omar Ray, Jared Peniston, Kamen Tucker, Mackie Crane, Jabari Furbert, Nasir Wade, Thaaqib Talbot.
