Shaela Bailey is on a mission to sell as many calendars as she can to raise money for Feed My Lambs Ministry.

The charity came up with the fundraising initiative to help support its orphanage, clinic and school in Montrouis, Haiti.

“I go to all my neighbours, then I say, ‘Good afternoon, we’re selling calendars for $15 and then we are going to send the money to Haiti because some people don’t have food and homes,” Shaela said.

“It lets them have food for four months — that’s only $15 for four months,” the eight-year-old added. In one week, Shaela has already sold about 12 calendars, which feature photographs taken by volunteers of the devastation brought about by the 2010 earthquake, children and volunteers in the school, orphanage and clinic, the donations that have been supplied to them, the construction work that has been undertaken by the charity, and its feeding programme.

“When I saw the smiles on their faces, that really inspired me,” Shaela said of people depicted in the calendars.

Shaela said many people are happy to buy the calendars and that those who did not have the cash when she first approached them, told her to come back another day.

“That’s how much people love kids because if we didn’t have kids, who would look after you when you’re older?”

The Northlands Primary School student has been helping her mother, Rachael Burrows, to raise funds for Haiti ever since Ms Burrows first travelled to Montrouis with the charity four years ago. Shaela has since assisted with collecting donations, tag days and now selling the calendars — next on her to-do list is making the trip to Haiti herself.

Ms Burrows, who has been to Haiti twice with Feed My Lambs Ministry, said she is very proud of her daughter.

“You always want your children to have the best of everything, the best education, but if you can teach your children compassion it will take them miles farther than any education,” she said. “We don’t have a lot and not a lot financially to give, but you can always give your time.”
