Singer-songwriter shoots for the stars

Playing from the heart: Richard Spencer says his single Faithful was inspired by a long-distance relationship. (Photograph by Roy Hathon)

While aspiring musician Richard Spencer worked a steady nine to five, he let his ambitions as a singer-songwriter sit on the back burner.

He recently partnered with producer Alex “Fiyah” Marshall and is ready to get his music out to the world. The 26-year-old, who performs as Spence, will release a love song today and two more tracks over the next few weeks.

Q: So what can people expect with your new singles?

A: Well, the first single coming out is called Faithful — the video for which was entirely shot in Bermuda.

All the songs are original. I wrote and composed them myself. Faithful is about a long-distance relationship.

In the opening line I mention the British Airways flight from Bermuda to the UK and the rest of the song goes on to talk about when your partner is away in a different country and far from you and you start to lose faith.

Some people consider it a happy, positive song, but I see it as having a bit of sadness. A while back I was hurt by a girl and I wrote the song from that place.

Q: How long have you been writing music?

A: Probably since I was maybe 16 or 17 years old. I actually have a huge catalogue of songs and Faithful was one I picked out of that. I thought it was a nice, feel-good romantic song.

I recorded a rough version some time ago on my laptop, but when I played it to Alex he liked it right away.

We are also releasing two other songs: Different Universe and Finally Famous. Different Universe might be known to some people in Bermuda. I performed it at the Peace Concert last year and it’s been on the local radio station, but we’ve just remixed and remastered it. We shot the video for that one in Los Angeles and it will be out later in the month. The third one, Finally Famous, is a great up-tempo, pop/rock record.

Q: You’ve been doing this for nearly ten years. How have you grown and developed as an artist?

A: Over the past few years I’ve worked quite a bit on my technical ability — singing and performing — and I’m definitely a lot more confident now. I played a gig at Tobacco Bay recently and was a lot more interactive with the crowd, telling jokes, whereas before I was a little shy and didn’t have much stage presence.

Now if I play at Harbour Nights I’m really not nervous. I’m more comfortable and playing to my ability. I’m still writing songs, but I’ve probably slowed down a bit from when I was younger.

Q: Why did you decide to join forces with Alex Marshall?

A: As an artist in general, now I think is the time to really push my career. Over the past six or more years everything I’ve done has been very amateur and low-budget, with me doing everything. Now we are going from the amateur days and now it’s to the point where we are working with renowned videographers and photographers from the US and Alex is using his industry contacts to get my music out to the right people.

Even though I’ve done a lot of experimenting on my own with producing, I still didn’t have much experience with recording software. So teaming up with Alex has been great because now he can focus on the production side of things and I just work on the singing.

Q: How has the partnership helped things for you?

A: It’s given me a lot of motivation, for starters. Over the last couple of years while working at my job I’ve let the music sit in the background. I rarely picked up my guitar or played the piano.

I would come home and sit down and watch the TV, like most people do in the evenings. I wasn’t playing as much as I would have liked to, but since Alex has pushed me to do this the passion has returned. When I get home from work the first thing I want to do is go into the studio and work on the mixing.

I’m such a perfectionist I will spend hours on one track. I’m super excited about our recent work. The first time I got the mix back from Faithful it was 5am. I listened to it on repeat and couldn’t go back to sleep afterwards.

I hadn’t heard any of my music at that level of production before, so I’m excited to hear what people think.

Q: Where do you see your career in music going?

A: I work full-time right now at an office but have been playing gigs on occasion over the last couple of years. I would eventually love to get an album out and already have a repertoire of 30 or 40 songs. Ultimately in the future I’d like to be a world-renowned artist.

That’s a big ambition, but I should shoot for the stars. Even if that doesn’t happen I’d like to make music a large part of life.
