Nominations have opened for this year’s Technology Innovation Awards.

Minister for Economic Development, Grant Gibbons, said: “Bermuda continues to benefit from residents, companies and other organisations providing technology solutions that have bettered our lives and the lives of others.

He added that the awards, now in their ninth year and known as the TechAwards, were established by the Department of E-Commerce to highlight Bermuda’s position as a sophisticated and hi-tech business destination.

The nominations, which close on Friday, October 23, have two stages.

The public can submit nominations for Bermuda’s best technology at www.techawards.bm in four categories — innovation of the year in international and local categories, innovative youth programme and mobile application.

A special TechAwards committee will examine the nominations, select the best and interview the front-runners before making a final decision.

The international innovation award last year was won by global technology company Trunomi, which has offices in Bermuda, Britain and the US.

Trunomi CEO Stuart Lacey said: “To be associated with such a prestigious award and one that works to promote Bermuda as a truly global, innovative and sophisticated technology and e-business hub is quite an accomplishment.

“Bermuda is a fantastic place to innovate and be an entrepreneur.

“Top-notch developers, leading edge IT and infrastructure, sources of capital and phenomenal corporate and jurisdictional governance are all well-established and readily available.”

The Department of E-Commerce will be joined by the Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative of Bermuda and Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) on the Global Entrepreneurship Week host committee.

Minister for Home Affairs Michael Fahy said: “Bermuda joins the world in celebrating innovation during Global Entrepreneurship Week. BEDC, as the lead coordinator, continues to work with the host committee to provide the local entrepreneurial committee with opportunities to highlight their talent and to reward our local innovators.”

And he said he looked forward to the TechAwards as “a catalyst to showcase innovation in Bermuda, not just on a local stage but internationally as well.”
