Dillas in top 50 at Worlds

overseas competition during the last week. And while none returned victorious, according to officials, they all performed well.

In San Diego, California, Jarryd Dillas and Tyler Marshall competed at the Junior Worlds -- an event won just a few years ago by Tiger Woods.

On the demanding par-71, 6,700 yard Steel Canyon course, Dillas recorded rounds of 78-76, finishing with birdies on 17 and 18 to make the final round cut on 154.

He rounded out the 54-hole event with a disappointing 85 but still placed in the top 50 among a field of 172, all of them aged 13 or 14.

Marshall, playing in the 11-12 age group, narrowly missed the cut when he carded 68 and 67 on the par-62, 4,000 yard Welk Resort course.

With the leading 36 advancing to the final round and the cut on 134, Marshall had to settle for 41st with a 135 total. Some 120 entered the event.

Meanwhile, across this side of the USA, five local juniors took part in the 22nd annual North and South Junior Invitational at Pinehurst, North Carolina, playing on three diffrent courses, the last being Pinehurst No.2 where a year ago the late Payne Stewart claimed the US Open.

In competition for 15-17 year-olds, Ryan Marshall fared best of the group, shooting rounds of 77-79-79 for a 235 total and 53rd place overall.

Eric West and Nick Dunkle tied for 66th when they each finished on 238, West recording rounds of 79-81-78 and Dunkle 82-75-81.

Fraser Hunt placed 86th on 245 with rounds of 78-81-86.

In a field of 104, New Jersey's John Fizer claimed victory with a 216 total.

Bermuda's lone female Laura Robinson finished 11th in her age division on 244 with rounds of 80-78-86. She had been in seventh place after the second round.

Also at Pinehurst last week were Bermuda youngsters Ebonie Burgess, Sam Riihiluoma, Steven McGuinness, Shannon Trott, Kameiko Smith, Jamie MacMillan and William Tucker, all of whom attended the Golf Advantage School.
