Fatal crash woman is making a steady recovery
A mother-of-three who broke her neck in a fatal car crash is back in Bermuda and "improving nicely", according to her father.
Evelyn Rewan was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital after the accident which claimed the life of her friend Winston (Yogi) Burrows in the early hours of Sunday, April 5.
Yesterday, her father Rev. Nelson Rewan revealed that — despite the broken neck, broken left knee, broken toe, injured forehead and losing a tooth — his daughter is making a steady recovery.
Rev. Rewan contacted The Royal Gazette to spread the word after numerous people stopped him in the street to ask how Ms Rewan was getting on. He thanked family and friends for all their support and prayers over the past two months.
"She's doing well and improving nicely," he said. "She has to wear a halo, but she gets up and walks about. She is having physiotherapy to get back to using her limbs.
"Every time I walk down the streets, people ask me how she is. The answer is: she's doing well."
It is thought Mr. Burrows offered to drive Ms Rewan home on the night of the smash, because he didn't think she was safe to drive herself after an evening in South Shore bars.
However, their car was involved in a collision with a truck, flipped over and burst into flames on South Shore Road, near The Swizzle, at about 1.30 a.m. Luke Armstrong, 24, faces six charges relating to the accident.
Rev. Rewan flew out to Massachusetts to be at his daughter's side, and describes the initial discomfort at seeing her bed surrounded by doctors.
"It was a shock as you don't anticipate this kind of thing. It's unexpected and stressful, but we kept it together," he said.
"The key is the prayers. Many of the churches said prayers for me and my family. I really appreciated their prayers."
Ms Rewan's next step will be to have her halo removed in the middle of next month. She spoke briefly to this newspaper yesterday to confirm she is on the mend, but declined to talk at length at this stage.
