All Black arrested in early hours

A New Zealand World Rugby Classic player was arrested in the early hours of Saturday for allegedly trying to enter a Fairyland Road home after a drinking spree.

The Kiwi is said to have broken by mistake into a Pembroke home which he thought was his temporary residence.

Police were called and he was arrested. The All Black was remanded in custody but later released on Police bail.

A Police Media spokesman confirmed the arrest. However, he would not elaborate whether the All Black had been charged.

The World Rugby Classic is a forum for world famous players from eight countries ? Argentina, Australia, Canada, England (Classic Lions), France, South Africa, United States and New Zealand ? to travel to Bermuda to compete annually. "All I know it was a genuine mistake," World Rugby Classic organiser John Kane said last night.

"People are staying at various houses."

Mr. Kane confirmed the incident. However, he did not know whether the player was due to appear in Magistrates' Court.

Mr. Kane said these things types of things happened rarely. He recalled once in the Classic's 17-year history, an Irish player left a hotel after a banquet and asked a taxi driver to take him to his residence. He said although the Irishman could not remember his address, he did remember the house had one distinguishing feature ? a white roof.

Local host Eileen Taylor organised places to stay for the All Blacks.

Ms Taylor said out of the entire New Zealand team only one player was staying in Pembroke. "I do have one person in Fairylands," Ms Taylor said.

New Zealand manager Andy Haden and team liaison Simon Carruthers could not be reached last night.

It is not the first time a sports team from down under has gotten into trouble in Bermuda. New Zealand's neighbours Australia only just made a return to the Classic in 2004 after it was banned for ten years following naked antics at a party in Number One Shed when the team allegedly took their rugby kits off.
