Hurdle in Windies squad

Bermuda rugby captain Derek (Bobby) Hurdle has been selected to represent the West Indies at the Los Angeles Sevens tournament in eight days' time.

Hurdle is a former captain of both the West Indies sevens and 15-a-side teams but has not played for the them since tearing a ligament in his knee three years ago.

"I'm really excited about getting out there again," he said yesterday.

"Before I hurt my knee I played a lot for them and since recovering from the injury they have not been going to a lot of international tournaments because of financial constraints and a few administrative shake-ups at the West Indies Rugby Union.

"In the past there have been quite a number of Bermudians involved in the sevens also, such as Jonathan Cassidy, Nathan Brown and Joshua and Danny McGovern but through a mixture of unavailability and non-selection, there's only me this time.

"I won't have met or played with some of the guys in the squad but these competitions are always a good challenge."

The West Indies are the bottom-ranked sevens team in the International Rugby Board's official standings and in Los Angeles they will be staring down the barrel of three hugely difficult games against New Zealand, Australia and Tonga.
