Metuchen on the move

second successive sub-60 round on the second day of the 43rd annual Goodwill Golf Tournament yesterday.

The foursome from Edison, New Jersey, led by professional Jim Miller, followed up their superb net 59 at Port Royal on Monday with an even better net 57 on the par 70 Belmont course yesterday.

But Miller and amateurs Dave Foley, Ray Romano and Joe Nita, still face Castle Harbour and Mid Ocean Club over the final two days on Thursday and Friday, and with a number of clubs breathing down their necks, the tournament is far from over.

While Metuchen's effort was impressive yesterday, it wasn't the best at Belmont.

That honour went to Berkshire Country Club from Reading, Massachusetts. After a mediocre 66 on the opening day at Port Royal, pro Barry Adams and amateurs Steve Mittl, Allison Reese and Jeff Pakradooni caught fire at Belmont to record a sizzling 56 and move into contention with a 122 total.

But even theirs wasn't the low round of the day.

Trenton Country Club from West Trenton, New Jersey, scorched round Port Royal for a net 55, moving the team of pro Dennis Milne and amateurs Gerald Coscia, Bob Fritsky and Ron Peeples up to fourth place overall (119), just three strokes behind Metuchen.

Plenty of other teams fired in the 50s yesterday, among them defending champions Long Cove from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Pro Bob Patton and his team rebounded from a 61 at Castle Harbour on Monday to shoot 57 at the tougher Port Royal lay-out and now stand on 118, two strokes behind the leaders and poised to make another serious challenge.

Mid Ocean Club continues to prove the toughest of the four courses being used as for the second successive day no team was able to duck under 60.

Best score at the Tucker's Town course was net 63, shared by six teams -- Aspetuck Valley, Redding CC, Salem CC, The Country Club, Weston GC and Whippoorwill Club.

Of the seven Bermuda clubs competing, Port Royal fared best yesterday as they rounded Belmont in 59 to add to a first day 63 on their home course. Frankie Rabain, David Ezekiel, Thomas Schwarzman and Francis Mussenden are now bracketed on 122 with Belmont (Cornell Bean, Cisco Gordyk, William DeSilva Jr, and Bruce Fenton) who returned a 63 at Port Royal yesterday after an impressive 59 on Monday at Castle Harbour.

First day leaders Lakewood Country Club from Rockville, Maryland, slipped to joint eighth yesterday with a 65 at Mid Ocean Club after their 57 at Belmont on Monday.

In the gross division, the foursome of James Lane, Carroll Lowenstein, Charles Hartnett and Brett Douglass representing the Winchester Country Club from Winchester, Massachusetts, stormed into a six shot lead (125) after a gross 62 at Belmont following a gross 63 at Port Royal on Monday.

Their nearest challengers are the local foursome of Keith Pearman, Robert Vallis, Michael Dunkley and Rickie Cox of Mid Ocean Club. They shot a gross 66 at Castle Harbour yesterday after a first round 65 at Mid Ocean.

The team tournament takes a break today as the professionals tee it up at Port Royal to contest an $18,000 purse in the annual Goodwill pro tournament. Don Brigham of the Rumson Country Club in Rumson, New Jersey will defend his junior title while Jerry Coats of the Greenwich Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut, will be aiming to repeat his senior division victory of a year ago.
