A grocery shopper's dream come true
Lindo's Family Foods. Not only does the supermarket operate with state-of-the-art equipment, but it boasts all that Bermudians have come to associate with the Lindo's name -- quality, friendliness and reasonable prices. Located on Middle Road in Warwick, the new store combines the unique charm of a family-run business with the modern facilities and wide selection of products afforded to a large supermarket. According to store manager Fabrizio Alvera, the successful combination was intentional. "Aspects of the old shop in Devonshire were also incorporated into the new shop in Warwick,'' he explained. "Our staff is just as friendly, we have a wide selection of items and brand names, and we constantly have specials on various goods.'' Added owner and general manager, William Moniz: "We have done everything we could to make the chore of shopping a pleasant experience. Our cashiers are well-trained and our computer technology is very quick so that the customer can leave the store as quickly as possible. And for busy periods, we have allocated 12 feet of space in front of the cashier, and 15 feet of space in front of the door so that there is as little congestion as necessary. We have also made our aisles as wide as we possibly could, to enable the customers to easily travel through them. There's lots of light everywhere, and, because the whole shop is brand new, it's very clean. And we intend to keep it that way.'' Renovations to the Warwick store saw 5,000 square feet of retail space added on to make a total of 13,000 square feet. And all of the work was completed without the store closing for even a day, said Mr. Moniz. "We worked day and night, Sundays, and whenever it was possible to get everything done as quickly as possible,'' he said. "And to make it more convenient for our customers, we didn't close at all. It took one year and three months to complete and our customers were very loyal to us. Even though the conditions were difficult, they kept coming in and seemed to be just as excited as we were about all that was going on and all the changes that were being made.'' A back-up system is even in place to ensure that the wide selection of quality produce, meats and other refrigerated items are kept at the best temperature at all times. "We have a refrigeration system which is comprised of about four compressors so that if one shuts down, it's covered by another,'' explained Mr. Alvera. "On the rare chance that the system does break down, although it's unlikely because it's brand new, it has a built in alarm system which goes off to warn not just us, but also its' manufacturer, Tyler, a company in the United States. As soon there is a problem, they are immediately informed and can diagnose it.'' According to manager, Zachary Moniz, the store's products are even protected against power loss. "All of the shop is connected with a generator so in case of a power failure, nothing is lost,'' he said.
"Everything continues to run at full speed. And while that is the normal practice for every supermarket, the size of our generator is not. Most only serve to operate the basics -- the front end of the store, the outside lights, etc. Ours is bigger than most. It can run the entire store, everything from the lights to our elevators.'' The famous Lindo's specials will also be available from the new store, explained the manager, with a special aisle indicating just which items are being sold at a reduced price. "Our specials are in one aisle, but only so that they stand out,'' he said. "Those same items can also be found on the main floor from where they can be bought at the same low price as their counterpart in the specials aisle. So it doesn't matter where they take it from. It's just to give the products greater exposure.'' Inside the freezers and throughout the aisles, a wide selection of well-known quality products are displayed so that they are easy to reach and easy to find. And with two warehouse incorporated into the building,

A trained chef, his services are always available to make suggestions as to what wine would best accentuate the taste of certain foods. "As a supermarket, it's the best display on the Island,'' said Mr. Alvera. "We offer the best selection. Our wines are all divided by region and we have a special section just for beers and another for special displays. "Everything is brand new and when people come in, we can see that they are impressed. It's all so bright and so clean that many of them just stand there and say, `Wow'. We are really convinced that we are going to be the best on the Island. We all have many years of experience behind us in the grocery business so can know what adjustments had to be made to fix any faults in the running of our business.
And the whole family helped to get us to where we are.'' Added Mr. Moniz: "But our main focus is still service. There's not much we can do to differentiate a can of beans from a can of beans so we have to differentiate ourselves in other areas and ours is service.''
