Anger at ‘impunity’ of city’s drivers

No spaces: Full parking bays in Front Street Parking

An upset commuter has spoken of her dismay at the car parking situation in the City of Hamilton.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, claims that people are not paying to park their cars and many are overstaying if they do, which has led to a lack of parking spaces in the city.

“The main issues of contention are the seeming impunity of dozens of parkers who are using neither EasyPark devices nor Pay & Display stickers and who seem to stay for very long periods,” she said.

“While we have verified the lack of payment, it is difficult to survey the length of parking time.

“However, due to a lack of turnover, parking spaces have become very scarce, which certainly seems to indicate that many are using No 1 [Shed] for all-day parking.

She added: “If clamping is indeed not legal at the present time, where are the traffic wardens?”

Chief Justice Ian Kawaley ruled last November that the Corporation of Hamilton does not have the power to clamp vehicles parked illegally.

Speaking to The Royal Gazette this month when concerns were first aired in relation to parking in and around Hamilton, as well as in disabled parking bays, Ian Hind rebuffed claims that there was nowhere to park.

Mr Hind, the Corporation’s senior engineer, pointed to multiple free parking spots in the Bulls Head lot, adding that often there were also spaces in the Par-la-Ville lot. However, the woman noted that this did little to help senior citizens who wish to park at the western end of the city or those who have simple chores they would like to perform.

Attempts by The Royal Gazette yesterday to get a response from the Corporation of Hamilton proved fruitless.
