More promotions for whites

During 2001, more white people were promoted in the work place than blacks or people of mixed or minority races.

At the executive, senior, middle management, and non-professional levels more whites were promoted than blacks.

At the professional and technical level, the number was the same.

CURE (Commission for Unity and Racial Equality) showed that 593 people were short-listed for promotion last year, however, a total of 925 people were actually promoted. It can therefore be inferred that some companies promoted people without previously short-listing them.

Of white workers, 190 percent of those short-listed were actually promoted.

Of the mixed races and other minority workers, 165 percent of those short-listed were granted the upwards move.

And of black workers, 140 percent of those earmarked were actually promoted.

The banking, insurance, real estate, and restaurant sectors were more likely to promote someone without first short-listing or interviewing them. Industries that had ratios of less than 100 percent, meaning that fewer people were promoted than were interviewed, included hotels and education.
