Burgess calls for Sir John?s recall
Retiring Bermuda Industrial Union leader Derrick Burgess yesterday called for Governor Sir John Vereker to be recalled.
He made the statement while lashing the Auditor General who he said was overstepping his bounds by trying to audit the Bermuda Housing Trust.
He said: ?In the law the Auditor General has no right to audit the housing trust ? that is the call of Minister Burch.
?Don?t you know that when he got that advice from the AG he went to another lawyer and tried to take the Housing Trust to court?
?That shows you they don?t trust us. The Governor is letting him do this nonsense. He should be recalled.?
The statement drew applause from delegates at yesterday?s BIU conference. He said he was offended that the Progressive Labour Party was labelled a black party as it had white members, past and present, who had been ostracised by other whites.
Race was still a big issues and needed to be tackled in a 100 small groups coming together to talk over the issues, said Mr. Burgess.
Once progress had been made with people understanding each other, a larger group could talk over the issues.
He said: ?Not all white people are racist, not all black people are racist. There are white folks out there just as anxious as us who want to get this thing on with and have people treated fairly.?
Mr. Burgess, who is also a Government MP, denied claims it was conflict of interest for a union leader to be in parliament and on the immigration board.
He said no such conflict of interest had been levelled at employers sitting on the immigration board or in the House. He also warned about the dangers to workers of outsourcing and globalisation.
