Dancers invited to apply for scholarships in memory of Pat

TALENTED dancers are being offered the chance to apply for scholarships from the Bermuda Ballet Association, to be awarded in memory of the late Mid-Ocean News reporter Patricia Calnan (pictured).

Students of any genre of dance and with any dance school, who are over the age of 12 years are invited to apply for scholarships to help fund dance tuition both in Bermuda and overseas.

Sallie Singleton, who chairs the Scholarship Committee, said Ms Calnan had made a significant contribution to all the arts in Bermuda and particularly to dance.

"Patricia was a founder member of the Association which began in 1962 to promote the art of dance," Mrs. Singleton said.

"Over the years she played a major part in the Association's work, which has been providing scholarships to generations of talented dancers from all schools on the island.

"She died three years ago and is greatly missed by all who admired her so much. It is an honour to present these awards in her memory."

Last year, seven young Bermudian dancers benefited from the Patricia Calnan Memorial Award.

The Bermuda Ballet Association is an umbrella dance organisation and is dependent on the continued support of the community. Its annual dinner boat cruise will be held on Saturday, May 28, leaving Albuoy's Point at 6 p.m.
