Finding a reason from and unusual source

Jennifer Wills has struggled with weight since the age of 11. Now she hopes the 100-Day Challenge will help her fit back into her pants and live a healthier lifestyle. Her column will be in the paper each week documenting her struggles and successes.

She is reading labels and trying hard to get to the gym, but now even her dog is considered overweight.

That is why Jennifer Wills the 31-year-old 5 ft 1 in administrative assistant from St. David's agreed to write weekly about her Live Healthy Bermuda 100 Day Challenge.

Wednesday January 16.

The Live Healthy meeting was mobbed! I joined the line with a few teammates and waited. After an hour I finally reached the front of the line. I gave them my age 31 and my height 5ft 1in.

The scale was actually a Body Composition Analyzer which gives you all the depressing details: I weigh 156.5lbs.

My Body Mass Index height to weight ratio is 29.6. (It should be between 18.5 — 24.9)

My percentage of total body fat is 38.9%

The weight of that fat (fat mass) is 61lbs Yikes.

The gym was far less mentally painful this evening. I got on an elliptical machine near a TV that I could hear so Merv Griffin's Crossword and Access Hollywood made the time go by more quickly.

Friday, 18 January I have absolutely no motivation today whatsoever. I am tired and grumpy and the last thing I want to do is go to the gym. So I'm not.

Sunday, 20 January

I still haven't made it to the gym but I have been keeping myself busy. Normally I am a complete sloth on the weekends!

This weekend I haven't stopped. Yesterday I did a bunch of errands in town that I've been putting off and took then took the hounds for a swim.

I'm also pleasantly tired after being on my feet all day bustling around, sorting and cleaning. Being busy meant I didn't do any boredom eating either.

Monday, 21 January

I realise I have to pay a lot more attention to food labels than before. I've been eating yogurt for snacks and dessert as I thought it would be better than cookies and chocolate.

I finally had a look at one of the yogurt labels and realised that little 6oz pot had 27 grams of sugar in it. A 12oz can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar so the yogurt worked out to have even more sugar than a Coke.

The next time I went to the grocery store I read every label and found one brand with only 7 grams of sugar and no fat.

Wednesday, 23 January

I found out today that not only am I overweight but my dog needs to lose 20lbs as well!

I knew she'd gained some weight, but I didn't appreciate quite how much until I saw her chart at the veterinarian's.

It's one thing to jeopardise my own health but it's another thing when my laziness is affecting my dog and causing her to be in pain.

So Scout is my new motivation to get moving — we will get fit together.
