Great company, boasts dedicated staff

CEO of American International Co. Ltd., Joe Johnson. It was in July of 1969 that Mrs. Trimingham began working with the company as Mr. Johnson's executive secretary and personal assistant, a position she maintains today. "American International is a great company,'' she said. "I graduated from Mt. St. Agnes with my secretarial qualifications and started working for Joe Johnson immediately as his executive secretary and personal assistant.'' Her office day is always varied, Mrs. Trimingham explained. "Obviously I do his correspondence, answer all telephone calls, set up meetings, arrange dinners, send out invitations and so forth. I find it interesting and I have found it so for 28 years. I enjoy my job, I like the company and the people I work with and my boss is a great person. He and I get along very well.'' Working day is never dull at AIG administration department which governs the stock room, the switchboard, the mail room, the file department and also the penthouse. So my job is really quite varied.'' After 30 years, Mrs. Hurdle said she still finds her duties fascinating. "It's really quite interesting. There's never two days the same and that's partially because I have to look over everything from household matter in the penthouse to visiting guests to travel plans. I also have to do all the ordering of stock for the company so I have to deal with stores and people outside American International as well. I have lots to do and it all keeps me from getting bored.'' American International Co. Ltd. was a lifesaver for Cindy Laws, hired to work there soon after she was made redundant by her former company. Her daytime home for the past 22 years, she called to find out whether there were any openings and is now its administrative supervisor. "I joined in 1975 and I love it very much,'' she said. "I handle the administration department, which means I'm responsible for purchasing, switchboard operations, files, the copy room, stock room and mail room. The day to day running of the penthouse comes under me as well. I don't think I'd be here if I didn't really enjoy it.'' Mrs. Law said she first worked as an administrative assistant until eleven years ago when she took over her present position. "When I first joined the company, they had just celebrated their 25th anniversary a few years before.

American International had given letter openers to staff members in commemoration of the event and there were some left behind. I can't believe that today I'm still with them and they're celebrating their 50th. But if you look around the company, there are a lot of long term employees and that says a lot about American International. It's not that common nowadays where people chop and change all the time. But you see people here and they're happy with what they are doing and with the company. "My job is very interesting and also very varied. I come in and I never know what I'm going to have to face; it's different every day. It's a real `people's job' in that it requires someone who is calm. You have to keep on smiling and that's sometimes hard when you have to deal with a lot of different types of people -- everyone from the executives on down to those in the mail room. But for me it's perfect.

It's a challenge.'' PHOTO Sharon Trimingham Cindy Laws Karen Hurdle
