Explore art in the East

Shoppers browsing at last year’s Art Walk in the East.

The second annual Art Walk in the East takes place on Saturday.“Events like this are very important for St George because we are bringing people down to see how wonderful the town is,” said Ami Zanders of the St George’s Artists Alliance group.“It is good for the community. Not a lot of locals go to the museums in St George, for whatever reason. With an event like this they can feel comfortable in the galleries and museums, if they don’t already. There will be something for everyone.”Art lovers are invited to walk around the Old Town, chat with artists, have some nibbles and learn about what artists are making in Bermuda, as part of the free event.“The one we did last year did really well,” said Ms Zanders. “We didn’t have a budget, but it was quite successful when we pulled it off. This year we received funds from the Bermuda Arts Council, CableVision, the Corporation of St George, and the Economic Empowerment Zone Agency.”The Art Walk in the Event promises to be a boost for the local artists who are able to display their work for free on Water Street as part of the event.Participating artists include Tricia Walters, Sharon Wilson, Monica Jones, Juanita LaShore, James Cooper, Allan Smith and Anne Kermode. Filmmakers Andrew Stevenson and Lucy Spurling will screen their films in the World Heritage Museum on Penno’s Wharf and musicians Quinn Outerbridge, Joy Barnum, Toni Bari, Sybil and Mike Hinds will perform.“It will be fun,” said Ms Zanders. “There will be lots of stimulation, and surprises hidden here and there.”The walk starts at the World Heritage Museum. The event runs from 6pm to 10pm. For more information e-mail amizanders@yahoo.com, see the Art Walk in the East Facebook event page or telephone 599-2076.
