PTB to modify bus schedule
The Ministry of Transport hopes to implement a less costly bus schedule.
In the House of Assembly last Friday Minister Derrick Burgess, who was speaking on tourism and transport budget on behalf of the Premier, said the new schedule will hopefully be just as efficient as the current one.
"The current bus schedule being operated at the Department of Public Transportation was implemented in 1999. Since then significant numbers of 'pieces of work' have been added to the schedules," he said.
"This non-rostered work or grey schedule represents approximately 25 percent of the trips and costs the department approximately 30 percent more to operate.
"The Ministry is working to address this and the Minister hopes to be in a position within the coming months to confirm the implementation of a new less costly schedule while maintaining the existing frequency and high quality and efficient services."
The Department of Transport has also established a new role, Transportation Coordinator, who will be responsible for bridging the service delivery gaps across the transportation sector.
"The fundamentals of the post relate to on-site coordination of public and private sector service providers at Bermuda's ports," Mr. Burgess said. "Honourable Members will be aware that the inception of Heritage Wharf has resulted in two cruise ships being berthed in Dockyard during the same period. Current scheduling indicates the arrival of up to 6,000 passengers at one time, requiring mandatory coordination of the varied modes of transportation."
