Government licence and permit fees raised

The cost of camping, peddling, gambling, operating a fishing boat and lobster diving were released in The Government Fees Amendment Regulations 2006 last Friday.

Lobster fishermen will pay exactly the same as they did in 2004 ? when the Fees Regulations were last updated.

A normal lobster licence costs $115, the same as 2004 and a license to catch lobsters using fixed fishing gear also remained static at $1,500.

However, licensing a local fishing boat will cost $363 from April 1, it said, up $17 from 2004.

Campers will now have to pay $11 per night ? $1 more ? for permits to use any Government land as a camp site for a family or group not exceeding eight persons, it said.

"Nothing in these Regulations shall affect the validity of a fee, paid before the coming into force of these Regulations," it said.

The Regulations also said that having a dog that cannot have puppies is cheaper to licence as a dog licence for neutered males and spayed bitches costs $24, it said, while all other dogs and bitches cost $66 to licence.

The cost of these dog licences were increased $1 and $3 respectively from the Government Fees Amendment Regulations 2004.

Guide dogs owned by the blind remain to be licensed for free, it said.

A permit to play Crown and Anchor at any licensed club which will cost $1,188 from April 1, it said, an increase of $57.

Pedlars can peddle their wares on the side of the road ? without using any vehicles ? for $32, it said, up by $2.

A standard size British Overseas Territories Citizen passport will cost $61, increase of $3, however, if you are over the age of 65 years, the same passport is still free, it said.

For work-permit holders, a one-year work permit ?valid for less than 18 months ?will cost $616 (up $29) from Saturday, while a five-year work permit ? valid for a period of 54 months or more but less than 66 months ? will now cost $3,082, (up $147) it said.

"Self-employed travelling salesman" can get permits for $308 per month, it said, an increase of $15.

And people already holding work permits can get an additional permit for not more than 12 months to work part-time as an artist for $79, it said an increase of $4.

Under the Betting Act 1975, a "pool betting agent's" licence would now cost $465, it said, while a bookmaker's licence is $5,000 ? up $24 and $235 respectively.

It will cost $441 now to keep a commercial horse stable with more than four but not more than 20 horses, it said, an increase of $21.

On March 3 Finance Minister Paula Cox told the House of Assembly that the new fee of $500 for a temporary work permit was a rise of $207, or 71 percent.

The cost for passengers who land in Bermuda without re-entry documents is being increased from $73 to $125, Minister Cox said last month, but the fee for a temporary, one-year or five-year permit for non-Bermudians who provide care to seniors was waived.

The Regulations also included a new $420 condominium licence charge and a 20 percent increase in fees for Planning applications, Ms Cox said last month.
