Two-year-old Chantia Boyles wandered into The Spinning Wheel with a playmate shortly after 11 a.m. and fell into a jacuzzi-type pool beside the main swimming pool.

The owner of The Leather Man, a shop two doors away from the nightclub, said the girl looked "bluish'' when he pulled her from the shallow pool and delivered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Chantia had been playing with the shop owner's two-year-old son Elijah, who told his father the girl fell backwards into the cold water. The man, who would only identify himself as The Leather Man, estimated she had been in the pool from five to ten minutes.

The girl, the daughter of Mrs. Beverly Boyles of Court Street, had a heartbeat but was not breathing when Police arrived at 11.25 a.m., he said. Pc Andrew Robinson administered CPR, said Sgt. Andrea Browne of Police community and media relations.

"We don't know how the child got in the pool,'' but an investigation was underway, she said.

Mrs. Judith Burgess, the wife of one of The Spinning Wheel owners, said workers from the Bermuda Telephone Company were installing new phone lines and left open a narrow wooden gate onto Court Street through which the children entered.

Telco general manager Mr. Ernest L. Pacheco confirmed a Telco crew was installing a new cable at The Spinning Wheel yesterday morning. As to whether anyone from Telco left the gate open, "we need to speak to the workmen who were in the area to determine that,'' Mr. Pacheco said.

"We won't be able to do that until (this) morning.'' Family members and friends were keeping a vigil outside the intensive care unit of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital last night, where the girl was on life support and listed in critical condition.
