Lambert fights back in Open

Sixteen year-old Jacklyn Lambert staged a stunning comeback at the Argus Open tennis championships yesterday, twice fighting back from 2-5 down, saving five set points along the way, as she battled to a 7-5, 7-6 (3) victory over Jo Tucker at the W.E.R. Joell Stadium.

"She appeared to play her best tennis only when she was down 5-2," commented Tucker after an exhausting 90 minutes. "It was unreal the way she played each time I was serving for the set."

In the first set, Tucker broke her youthful opponent in the third and fifth games, then held in the seventh for a 5-2 lead. That's when young Lambert came to life.

She changed from a soft touch game and began spraying shots to all corners of the court with pace and accuracy, forcing her older opponent from side to side.

That strategy took its toll and worked perfectly for Lambert as she roared to victory and set up a possible encounter with top seed Ashley Brooks in the semi-final. Brooks was leading Joanna Dobson in straight sets, 6-1, 4-1 when rain stopped play.

Meanwhile, Brooks' top seed counterpart in the men's division, Gavin Manders exposed the real difference between the A and B divisions when he breezed past leading 'B' seed Tony Thompson 6-1, 6-3.

Men's B second seed Na'im Azhar started the day with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kevin Caza while Vaughn Burrows made short work of Michael Roberts, winning 6-0, 6-0 and the Island's second ranked player, Jenson Bascome, surprised Eugene Simmons 6-0, 6-0.

In earlier action Brooks and Manders teamed together in the mixed doubles to defeat Barbara Lambert and Eldon Daniels, while Tracey Berrell defeated Amanda Burns 7-5, 6-0 and Leslie Stowe got past Burton Butterfield 6-1, 6-0.
