Sniffer dogs used as police quiz nursing home worker

POLICE used sniffer dogs to search Pembroke Nursing Home after officers questioned an employee of the home, the Mid-Ocean News has learned.

Health and Family Services Minister Patrice Minors confirmed yesterday that the incident took place on May 2 but said the police visit had nothing to do with the home itself.

Ms Minors said no charges have been brought against the employee and nothing of interest to the police was detected by the dogs.

"An employee at the home was questioned by the police and is assisting them in their investigation of an incident which is not related to the home," Minister Minors said yesterday.

"The employee was not arrested, nor was the employee charged with any crime. As a result, there was no reason to prevent the employee from returning to work.

"When the police came to the home, they spoke with the administrator and made it clear that their presence should have no ramifications on the employee's position at the home.

"Apparently dogs were used by the police at the home, but the police did not indicate that they were looking for drugs, and no drugs were found, as far as I am aware.

"There were no repercussions at the home, as none were necessary at this stage."

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday: "A gentleman was arrested in connection with an investigation and was then released. No charges were made."
